Utica, N.Y. — A 19-year-old mother who recently graduated high school was shot and killed early Friday morning in Utica, police said.
Kyamonie Davis, of Utica, was found shot multiple times on Faxton Street while officers were investigating another shooting, said Lt. Michael Curley, a spokesperson for the police department.
Davis was a recent graduate of Proctor High School and was the proud mother of her daughter named Ka’lani, her family told police.
Davis died on a night when police responded to three shootings in different areas.
The first shooting was reported at 12:30 a.m. at a store at 822 South St., Curley said.
As police were investigating the shooting at the store, a ShotSpotter notification alerted them to shots fired on Faxton Street.
That’s where Davis was shot, along with a man, he said. The man had gunshot wounds to his back and Davis had multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
Both were taken to Wynn Hospital, where Davis died.
The family is devastated to have lost a loved one due to gun violence, they said in a statement that police shared.
“Davis was a caring, trusting and beautiful soul to her daughter, family and friends,” the statement said.
At 3:30 a.m., police were still investigating the shooting on Faxton Street when they received another alert that shots had been fired on the 1500 block of Howard Avenue.
Multiple gunshots were fired at a home on Howard Avenue while residents inside were sleeping. Children were in the home at the time, he said. No one was injured in the shooting.
Police are working to determine if the shootings are connected, Curley said.
Police ask anyone with information regarding the incidents to call its major crimes unit at 315-223-3556.
